Consciously Sedated

Consciously Sedated is a new alternative funk-rock band from Hendersonville, NC. The band consists of Ross (guitar/vocals), Jonathon (bass), Damian (keys/vocals), and Spencer (drums/vocals). Everyone in the band brings a lot to the table. The crowd is left open-mouthed and spell bound at the shows by Ross's licks and guitar solos. His controlled vocals really shine through in the band's original music. Jonathon brings a unique and funky flavor that gives diversity to the band. He throws in funky progressions and changes that stand out and add to the band’s appeal. He really comes alive on stage and the presence is felt by all. Spencer also has a lot to offer. His steady beat and drum fills drive the band and give off energetic vibes that capture the audience’s attention. There is also the outstanding drum solo at the shows that never fails to bring the crowd to its feet. Damian’s funky, jazzy style of playing is highlighted in the band’s original music as well as their unique choices of cover songs. Damian’s vocal style is one that is unique and captivating to his audience. His calm stage presence and ability to interact with the crowd is essential to the band and helps the night run smoothly. The band captures their audience in their transition from relaxing slow jazzy tunes to funky jams that can instantly get the whole bar out on the dance floor. The diversity and energy of the band blows people away and is like nothing ever created before. The band will be starting in the Hendersonville/Asheville area and plans to line up a tour in the future. Be sure to make it out to a live performance, because Consciously Sedated will blow your mind, get you on your feet, and completely amaze you.

Corinne Gooden

Corinne is excited to once again play at The Back Room! Coming off of a
small Northeast tour, this show will be Corinne’s first official CD release
show, for her debut album, “All My Days”!! Recorded in Nashville, this
album features full-band versions of some of her earlier songs, as well as
some newer unreleased songs.
Corinne was born and raised in the mountains of North Carolina. Early in
life she developed a love for folk, blues and classic rock, but has in recent
years found her own voice. Often playing in alternate tunings, her songs,
while very personal, are extremely relatable and focus on the emotional
struggles that we as humans go through in life, such as insecurity, hope,
falling in and out of love, and the complex journey of finding out who we
are and how we fit into the world.
Corinne's writing style is greatly influenced by the singer-songwriters of
earlier generations, such as Joni Mitchell and James Taylor, as well as
today's artists, such as Patti Griffin, and Ani DiFranco. Through her
melodic songs, her voice passionately stretches beyond the realms of
strength and fragility. She is not afraid to bear her heart, showing not just
vulnerability, but also her kindness, her desire to live, and most
importantly, love.
Corinne lived in New York City for six years, playing in various clubs as a
solo artist, as well as singing in a hip hop group, where she opened up for
such acts as The Roots, The Black-Eyed Peas, Common Sense, and
Ludacris. She currently resides in Nashville, TN, where she performs
locally as well as regionally. She also works as an engineer and producer,
and has a degree in Audio Engineering from SAE.

Deep River

After hearing Deep River sing one of their own compositions, 'Remember Always', live on the Bell Buckle (Tennessee) Jamboree Radio Show, local resident Charlie Louvin of Louvin Brothers fame told the country vocal group, "I'd like to hear y'all play that song on the Opry." Although they haven't yet had that opportunity, Deep River has sung with Country Music Hall of Famer Vince Gill, as well as opened for country star Mark Wills and the 'Mother of Bluegrass', Wilma Lee Cooper. Founding members Sandy Howard and Sharon Lewis have been performing together since April 1993 in Nashville, Tennessee, and the current line-up made it's Asheville, North Carolina debut in August, 2007. While in Nashville, Sandy and Sharon recorded three CDs, wrote or co-wrote eight songs, two of which, 'Civil War' and 'Silver Eagle', received 'honorable mention' from Music Row magazine's Robert K. Oermann, and one of those, 'Silver Eagle', received a little radio airplay on small market country stations around the US. The name 'Deep River' conjures up thoughts about the natural circle of life, and that's exactly how one might describe their music---stories of love and loss told in the context of family-style harmonies and danceable rhythms.

The Stereofidelics

Since releasing their first EP in early 2007, The Stereofidelics (formerly known as Quick Six) have firmly established themselves in the musical hotbed of Asheville, NC. Their infectious and energetic sound has earned them performances in such prestigious venues as the Grey Eagle Music Hall and has garnered them regular airplay from stations including AAA station WNCW.  The Stereofidelics are promoting their EP release outside of Asheville as well, touring throughout the southeast, midwest, and into the northeast during the summer of 2007.  They are currently working on their debut album which is due out in early 2008.

By showcasing their multi-instrumental capability, The Stereofidelics are able to operate completely as a duet and deliver a full sound.  Relying on their passionate vocals, organic harmonies, and spontaneous instrumental creativity, they perform with the unmistakable emotional attachment of co-creators. "They. . .do the proverbial in creating something greater than the sum of its parts" (Dave Carter, WETS-FM)

The Stereofidelics have the energy of Bluegrass, the seduction of Latin, the freedom of Jazz and the raw passion of Hard Rock driven by instinctive virtuosity and musicianship.

The Bees Knees

The Bee's Knees are a product of expert musicianship, honest vocals, good solid song writing, and a few too many cups of coffee. The band came together in West Asheville, NC, in the spring of 2007, when Peter James (the former secret weapon of the Slant 6 cowboys on the 95North record label) and Amanda Anne Platt  decided to combine their mutual appreciation for classic country, country blues,  and their original song writing efforts in a get rich quick scheme. It didn't work out quite like they had planned, but with the addition of Ian Harrod on the stand up bass and Spencer Taylor on mandolin the group has been delighting and entertaining all those that have the good fortune to come across them. Their original sound, which has been classified as bluesy, devastating americana and honky tonk, is sure to get you dancing.

Johnson's Crossroad

Singer/songwriter Paul Johnson, a native of Greenbrier County, West Virginia, has been developing his craft for quite some time now. Ever since he was a child, music has been a big part of his life. Since then he has found musicians who share his passion and influences. Together with life-long friend Geoff Richards, a sound was developed that is as unique and distinctive as Paul's raspy, powerful voice. He writes songs from the same vein as Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan, Bill Monroe, and John Hartford. Now Johnson's Crossroad mixes old time, country, bluegrass, and punk styles into what they have coined "West Virginia Bent Acoustic Country." Their originals draw from lost love, lost fortune, lost time, and overcoming hardships. The familiar substance of the material has generated a large local fan base, which has expanded outside of Greenbrier County. They choose a minimal approach to their live shows, using a vintage style mic, which give a more dynamic appeal. Johnson's Crossroad can be appreciated by all audiences.

Marshall Ruffin

The twenty-three year old roots and blues singer-songwriter-guitarist grew up in typical Americana, where science was at the fabric of his family not art. After finding a guitar in his attic at age thirteen, Marshall taught himself to play. Just several short years later, he majored in jazz performance at the Berklee College of Music. It was while in Boston, Ruffin recognized and tapped into his songwriting skills and vocal gifts. Within a year after graduation, Marshall moved to Columbus GA [home of Ma Rainey], opened for dozens of regional and national artists, and signed with Jammates Records. After experiencing a Marshall Ruffin performance, one only expects his momentum to accelerate. Rich Man's Dime, his freshman EP, hit the streets February 19th 2008. Over the coming months, Marshall will be playing solo and with his trio throughout east coast music venues in support of the record before returning to the recording studio later this year.

Brian Ashley Jones

Brian  is a soulful singer, accomplished lead guitarist, and versatile songwriter who draws from a variety of traditional music to create his own brand of Americana. Described as "Blues Grass", Jones' music is heavily influenced by the guitar driven blues, bluegrass, country, and rock that he absorbed while growing up in a musically diverse family in South Carolina. Now based in Nashville, Tennessee and endorsed by Taylor Guitars, Jones maintains an active touring schedule and performs about 150 live shows per year.

Jones showcases his writing and playing chops with 11 well crafted original songs in his 2007 release Courier. The swampy instrumental "Pull 'em Up" has been featured in the widely acclaimed PBS television series Road Trip Nation, and the lighthearted bluegrass tune "Johnny Appleweed" has been selected as the theme song of a feature length film.

Along with his own busy touring schedule, Jones has found time to accompany a diverse batch of artists on stage and in the studio including Eric Heatherly, Caroline Aiken, Sara Hickman, Donna Hopkins, and Grammy Award winning songwriter Jon Vezner.

Where to begin? I'm your everyday Singer Songwriter dabbling in Rock, Country, Blues, & Americana. I toss it all in a blender and I yam what I yam.
I live here in Hendersonville, contemplating waterfalls, my children (I have four kids), & life in general. These reflections are shown in my music.

I just released my long overdue debut CD, called Green River. I finally put off procrastinating and did it. I couldn't be happier with the results. It's an 11 song collection with lots of guitars, harmonies, organ, drums, the whole she-bang. Check it out I think you'll dig it.

Grand pianos are hard to fit in the trunk and carry to your audience. Instead Christina has
implemented the sampled sounds of an acoustic instrument with electronic synthesizers and vintage
electric pianos. The rock aspects of her music are accented when she performs with percussionist,
Nate Barrett. The recent addition of the sweet harmonies of Laura Bost have added a uniquely
southern accent to the soundscape.
Bost, also an escapee of the UT School of Music, provides contrast to Horn's low and sultry voice.

Comparisons to Fiona Apple and Stevie Nicks only touch on the quality of her voice. The style of her
piano playing bears more likeness to Beethoven and Bruce Hornsby. We seek out relationships and
comparisons to make sense of something new, but they never paint the picture fully. The only way to
make sense of it is to listen.

Charles Wood and The Lonesome Road Band

"Great acoustic music" is the statement that best describes the music of the Lonesome Road Band. Using the traditional tools of bluegrass in creating music, to categorize them strictly as bluegrass would be a misrepresentation. The band's repertoire consists of everything from Bill Monroe's My Sweet Blue Eyed Darlin' to the Moody Blues' Nights In White Satin. The group's haunting, bluegrass inspired harmonies stir the souls of even the most mundane listeners. Their approach to the music they perform is undeniably top shelf. The vocals are up front with lead and supporting harmonies weaving effortlessly. Their vocals blend so well that it is difficult to tell who is singing each part.

Me And The Boys

Me & The Boys provide the perfect combination of soft country and nostalgic rock. They
bring a unique fresh sound to familiar songs of the past together with beautiful original material.
Angela Heatherly (Lead and Background Vocals)
has always loved to sing and share her clear, sweet voice with the world.
In fact, she is often compared to Karen Carpenter. In the eighties she
started her professional career by singing with show-bands at some of
Americas famous theme parks. She moved to Nashville in the nineties
when she had the opportunity to join a successful country recording
artist as background vocalist. Since returning to North Carolina she has
pursued a solo career and in 2006 she released her first CD “Simplicity”.
Terry Wetton (Guitar, Piano and Vocals) has been
in the music business all his life. Starting with the London music
scene in the 70’s, he was the lead vocalist in the successful English
band Joker. In the 80’s he moved to California where he wrote
songs, produced successful CDs and worked on other music projects
including producing the first CD for Grammy nominated jazz artist
Tony Guerrero. Since moving to North Carolina he has continued his
production work with local artists and is promoting his new CD of
original songs called “Some Stuff I’ve Done”.
Cas Haskell (Bass Guitar) started his musical career playing
classical piano but soon discovered that he was far more interested in
popular music. Although he played trumpet and sousaphone in the high
school band it was a fascination with the bass that dictated his musical
direction. Before joining the band he played with Bobby and Blue
Ridge Tradition, a bluegrass band based in North Carolina.

After many, many years of working with some of the finest blues musicians in the world (Hubert Sumlin, PineTop Perkins, Kim Wilson, Levon Helm, Carey Bell, Skeeter Brandon, Johnny Whitlock, Mike Wesolowski, Charlie Musselwhite, Calvin "Fuzz" Jones, Max Drake and Bob Margolin just to name a few), Russ Wilson decided to put together his own band - THE MIGHTY MIGHTY MEN.

This group of hand picked musicians is considered one of the finest Jump blues bands in NC and the surrounding states. Not only do they play Jump Blues but also Swing and Rock & Roll. All done with their own flair and a slightly twisted sense of humor. When you see one of their shows you’re guaranteed to have one helluva swinging time.

"Christa DeCicco has a full, confident voice that she uses for just the right kind of music. Call it "folky" to a lot of folks and a less-than-stellar stereotype might come to mind. But DeCicco doesn't rest her acoustic, gypsy-hinted blues-folk on the laurels of languid strumming and hackneyed lyrical melodrama. With the Jons, she has a trio that makes it all swing a bit. There's some swagger to their steps".

Wendy Jans

I moved to Nashville in 2002 and began learning how to write for the country market. I got a publishing deal with an independent music row publisher and got to do some cool things like participate in Nashville Public Radio’s Songwriter Sessions. In 2005, I was named winner of the River Bluff Performing Songwriting Competition and also racked up a couple of accolades as a finalist in the International Song Search and Honorable Mentions in the Billboard World Song Contest and Nashville Song Search. But, restless again, I realized that I wanted and needed to express myself without going thru the Nashville Rulebook – interpreting my own ideas and channeling my deeply-ingrained, yet variable musical influences like; Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Karen Carpenter, Jill Scott, Amy Grant, Elton John and India Arie. I ended up writing my new album, (Today), that, I think, is uniquely me. This was also my opportunity to produce – allowing me to interpret my music and my words with absolute freedom (with the help of my awesome programmer and co-producer, Jason Garner). I absolutely loved the creativity of this process, and the chance to work with some of the most amazing musicians in Nashville. So there you have it. Until I wander again, I’m happy to have arrived at Today.

Barnacle

Barnacle is an acoustic/electric trio (two acoustic guitars, one electric bass) that has been a fixture around Brevard the last four years. Originally a duo founded by Michael Babb and Naren Schoenacher as a side project to their primary groups (Electro Dog and MarsupiaL respectively), Robert Jones (formerly of the band Peace Jones) was asked, early last year, to join them on bass.

Their sound is derived from a long, diverse list of influences. Given the variety of sounds Barnacle draws from, there is bound to be something for everyone in their original material. Generally speaking, their own sound might be described as folk-rock with elements of funk and blues.

Chic Night in the Back Room!
Featuring Laura Blackley and Nikki Talley

Laura Blackley
You can’t get nothing out of your art if it don’t sting you a little bit in the process. That’s my philosophy on writing songs. I’ve been writing songs and stories since I was 5 years old. I’ve been doing it as a job for the past 15 years. I specialize in love and murder ballads, ghost stories, and done-somebody-wrong songs. I love the blues, rock and roll, and country music, and you can tell it when you listen to my records.

Nikki Talley

Now at 30, self taught & captivating...mesmorizing audiences with her energetic stage performance, her powerful voice & strongly emotional and seductive lyrics, nikki's songs are very unique and each one gives us different look inside the artist...from pretty piano tunes to guitar-based acoustic rock songs, each is all a part of her.

The Cheeksters

...the usual Britpop (most notably on “What The Pretty Girl Did” and “Tumble Down Hair”) influences abound – that is, after all, what the band does best-but the traces of Memphis soul and Bakersfield country are just as welcome and essential. On “Sideways,” Shannon contributes the year’s most seductive vocal while Little’s playfully layered guitars hearken directly back to the production values of Mickie Most and Paul Samwell-Smith… Its heart may lie in the mystic sixties but, much like the best of that era, it sounds as bright and fresh as a Beach Boys sunflower. --Rapid River (Asheville, N.C.)

Karma

KARMA is a force to be reckoned with. An Indie pop-rock artist, equipped with phenomenal talent, addictive songs and an uncanny ability to captivate every listener. Her sound is reminiscent of Suzanne Vega and Natalie Merchant infused with the pop friendliness of The Cranberries. Without a doubt KARMA’s most powerful quality is the blatant heartache instilled into her writing and performances – an attribute that has won her the accolade of 1 wordsmith in her homeland.
