Thursday September 9, 8:30pm Blue Billy Gritt
BlueBilly Grit’s definition of bluegrass is anything but ordinary.
A North Georgia based band, BlueBilly Grit draws its inspiration
and drive from all genres of music. You’ll hear lots of original tunes
with their own unique style and sound, along with some traditional songs
from artist like Bill Monroe or the Dillards, Johnny Cash, The Beatles,
Janis Joplin, and even some Alanis Morissette, all done BlueBilly style of course.
This past year was spent playing venues in the Southeast, gaining momentum,
and getting some studio work done. Their new CD, “Mill Grinder’s Blues,” was released in November of 2009. Mark Garrison plays banjo, guitar, mandolin, and if you can talk him into it, some fiddle. Adam “Doc” Garrison keeps the beat on Doghouse bass, Matt Garrison plays the flattop like you’ve never heard it before, and Amber Garrison has a voice that...well, you just have to hear it. This high-energy band also has that three part family harmony that makes
bluegrass what it is and will leave you with a new and fresh appreciation for a style of music
that’s as old as the hills from which it came. http://www.bluebillygrit.com/ |

Friday September 10, 9:00pm Stephaniesid The band possesses remarkable technical prowess, lending all the proper tools needed to create well-crafted songs and beautiful recordings. The music explores both the melancholy and triumph of human life and love, the players equally faithful stewards of large, intoxicating swells and infectious dance melodies. Stephanie Morgan, a lusty-voiced "hyperactive siren" (Go Triad, Greensboro, NC), performs sans instruments, channeling the likes of Blondie, Bjork, Jim Morrison, Beth Gibbons, and the unflagging hope of an Iowan-born and Texas-raised former gymnast. stephaniesid was born in 2002, around the nucleus of now husband-wife writing team Stephanie Morgan (vocalist) and Chuck Lichtenberger (keyboardist). The duo has toured with a changing cast of stellar band members (vibraphonist Matthew Richmond, drummer/vibist Kari Richmond, drummer Cameron Juroff, drummer/producer Vic Stafford, Atlanta bassist Rob Geisler, upside-down guitar whiz Michael Libramento, drummer Kevin Rumley of Bandazian). The band's debut album, "Spiral In," was quickly placed in regular rotation by regional AAA station WNCW. The same year, the album was named in the Top 100 national releases by regional AAA-beacon WNCW, the Asheville Ballet choreographed "ANNA! A Rock Ballet" to the music (commanding an encore run later that year), and NYC's JANE Magazine chose the single "Popsicles" for their 2005 compilation. The band also released a 'B-sides' EP ("This EP is MONEY") in early 2006. The satirical "White Guys Selling Cars" was widely appreciated by fans, as was the band's cover of Portishead's "Glory Box." Out of a basement jam in early 2006 came the unabashed "Unmistakably Love". This began the earnest recording the third stephaniesid release, "Grus americanus". In the midst of the recording, Morgan and Lichtenberger were married in Iceland and the band signed with Nine Mile Records. "Grus americanus", produced by Vic Stafford, features performances by several of Asheville's best musicians and singers. The record released nationally on Sept. 11, 2007, and has garnered attention from Paste, Harp, and Filter Magazines, and several other national publications, and is receiving national radio play. stephaniesid has again been named in the Top 100 National Releases of 2007 by WNCW for "Grus." "It would be some sort of musical travesty if stephaniesid flies under the Rolling Stone radar for much longer..." says The Daily Times in Knoxville, TN of "Grus americanus". The single "Unmistakably Love" (deemed "unmistakably a hit" by Encore Weekly in Wilmington, NC) has been featured on numerous national CD samplers and film/tv placements http://www.myspace.com/stephaniesid |

Saturday September 11, 9:00pm The Cheeksters What you should know: Founded in the 1990s by husband-and-wife duo Mark Casson (guitar, vocals, allsorts) and Shannon Hines Casson (vocals, bass), The Cheeksters combine the best of what made music great in the 1960s with a winning, fresh pop approach that delights audiences. In the studio, the group has produced five albums of "timeless, tuneful, terrific" pop that has real staying power. Onstage, the versatile five-piece band turns out its straightforward, catchy pop confections, bringing to mind a swirling variety of influences: Memphis soul (Shannon’s from Memphis), Carnaby Street pop (Mark is British), swampy rhythm & blues, and more. And in the process they create something exciting, new and accessible.
Imagine a world where late 60s/early 70s AM radio pop — with its succinct, infectious vibe and vital immediacy — still reigns supreme. Imagine for a moment the Small Faces fronted by David Bowie and Dusty Springfield. Now forget all of that, and listen to The Cheeksters. The group's onstage repertoire draws from the timeless melodies on their five critically-acclaimed studio albums; the group's most recent release, Movers and Shakers, has received the best notices yet. As much at home onstage in front of a festival crowd as in a small, intimate pub, The Cheeksters bring their engaging live act to audiences in the US and UK. Their catchy, rousing songs -- especially numbers like the anthemic "Thrill of a Lifetime" and perennial favorite "The Neighbourhood Kids" lend themselves to audience involvement, and the Cassons' compositions are the sort that will pleasantly stick in the head for days afterwards. You need to see this band.
What the critics say: “Unfettered poppishness...you need to see this band.” — Ashvegas blog “Inspired by rock and soul [but] very much of the moment.” — Mountain Xpress “Unabashedly groovy…strands of R&B, glam, Britpop and bubblegum.” — Nashville Scene “Natural British pop sensibility… over a winning indie pop beat.” — Absolute Powerpop “Beautiful music!” — DJ Islas de Robinson, Spanish National Radio (RNE) 3 “Soul influenced stylings...pure, upbeat pop; a sought-after live act.” — Musoscribe.com “They were just really f**king good.” — The Opening Acts blog

Thursday September 16, 8:30pm Johanna Jacobson W/ Ralph Roddenbery Johanna Jacobsen was born in Saratoga Springs, NY. At an early age, she began training on classical violin. By the eighth grade, Johanna became a member of the Empire State Youth Orchestra, and got the opportunity to tour with them to Austria and Hungary, where they played for the Hungarian Army. Once in high school, Johanna joined band, playing bassoon, and was chosen to be part of the Choraliers, the elite chorus in her high school.
After high school, Johanna went on to college and a career completely separate from music...that was, until she moved to Nashville...
During her second year in Nashville, Johanna got a part-time job at a well-known restaurant/bar, called the Broken Spoke. Here is where she was introduced to the songwriting aspect of music. By the end of that year, Johanna had decided to make a major career move - she would leave her stable job, go to Massage Therapy school, and begin learning guitar and songwriting. Over the next few years, she slowly progressed her skills - playing guitar, songwriting, and singing. In 2005, Johanna met Tim LaRoche, and soon became part of the band, Shed. Johanna was the harmony singer, and got her first glimpse at being in a band. Over the next few years, they progressed to showcasing for major labels and opening for Gretchen Wilson and Charlie Daniels.
During her time with Shed, Johanna continued her own songwriting. She came out with her first album in 2008 - "What It's Like To Fly". Johanna was now ready to find her own....And since then, her songwriting, singing, and performing has progressed to where she now has songs being pitched to major-label country artists in Nashville. She is gaining a name for herself and beginning to find, and create, her own sound. You can find Johanna playing at writer's nights, acoustic and full-band shows, festivals, coffeeshops, and more...
Her sound is influenced by so many different types of music (rock, pop, R&B, country) but mainly, artists, such as Alison Krauss, Sarah McLachlan, Patty Griffin, Sheryl Crow, Norah Jones, Carole King, and Natalie Merchant. have helped shaped Johanna's sound. And it's still being shaped...everyday....

Friday September 24 98:00pm Corrine Gooden Corinne Gooden, is excited to once again take the stage at the Back Room! Born and raised in Hendersonville, and based in Nashville, TN, she has an eclectic sound ranging from soft and melodic, to bold and bluesy. She always keeps the crowd dancing with her mix of originals and popular covers, and is touring in support of her CD "All My Days". "(Corinne) shows magnificent control of her voice and has an emotional inflection that heightens the personal sentiments in her writing. Her vocal performance is similar to contemporary female singer/songwriters like Paula Cole, Sarah McLachlan, and Bonnie Raitt. Gooden's lyrics are very personal and honest, and she sings them with such conviction and melody that the listener becomes hooked and must know what she'll sing about next." - RadioIndy http://www.corinnegooden.com http://www.myspace.com/corinne http://www.sonicbids.com/corinnegooden http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87MBLUxLT0o |

Saturday September 25 9:00pm Hudson K “...Hudson K is the real deal, a band with influences galore but a sound that is their own, a rare quality in this day of the doppelgangers haunting the charts and airwaves..” Jim Sells, Enigma Magazine (Chattanooga, TN) Hudson K weaves a kaleidoscope of sound using colors that range from exciting wall of sound rock to simple voice and piano: saloon hall whimsy, lyrical honesty, vocal harmony, strings, banjos, a Hammond organ, vintage pianos and trash-cans. Songwriter and pianist, Christina Horn, earned a master’s degree in piano from the University of Tennessee. She cancelled her wedding, sold her house and left behind conservatory-style teaching and security to pursue her dream of being a songwriter and performer. Drummer Nate Barrett is a stand-out player in the southeast and regularly sits in with regional touring acts. Jeff Christmas, also classically trained, switches seamlessly between vocals, electric guitar leads and bass lines. http://www.myspace.com/hudsonktoday |

Tuesday September 28 9:00pm Carrie Arrowood Singer/songwriter Carrie Arrowood, a Kentucky native, started playing piano at age 7. Once determined to become a stage musical composer, Carrie has written her own songs since she was a teenager. Her former addiction to musicals and admiration of singer/songwriters has given way to songs that are melodically strong with personal, pithy, sometimes whimsical lyrics. Her compositions come from the constant riot in her daydreaming mind (and mystical faerie realms unknown.) Carrie's 2008 CD, "Journey of You," recorded and produced by Steve Whiteside, features nine orginial songs, a follow-up to her demo "Music from The Back Room." Carrie is working on a live CD release with Tom Rogers and Rainbow Jimmy Productions. |

Friday October 1 9:00pm Brian Mcgee Hosts another "Singer In The Round" Along with Brian The Back Room Welcomes: Mary Ellen Bush Ben Lovett Andy Herod Having spent his musical adolescence in Pennsylvania playing in punk rock bands, Brian McGee is not the most natural figurehead for a movement of new Americana rock. But after living in Western North Carolina for the last ten years and absorbing the sounds and culture of the region, McGee has milled a new angle into his songwriting palette and taken to fusing his punk rock heritage to raw country sounds. Once it became obvious to him that Iggy Pop and The Carter Family played the same three chords, McGee was off and running. The Taking or The Leaving, McGee's raucous and heartfelt sophomore LP, hearkens back to a time in musical history when the blues, R&B, and country genres were being bent into rock and roll. He taps this moment with a sharp, modern awareness, that allows him to tell new stories, void of clichés. Listeners familiar with 2008’s eponymous release Brian McGee & The Hollow Speed, will still hear McGee’s familiar vocal style, oft-described as howling and whiskey soaked, raw and vulnerable. But on this record, the guitars are louder, the singing is stronger and the fiddles and banjos are traded for pedal steel and Hammond B-3 organ. The tunes on this record swerve through many of life’s avenues and range from revved up Buddy Holly romps like “Hold Sway,” which takes a frank and positive look at desperation, to ballads with a rockabilly and swing backbeat like “Let’s Bleed,” “First Kiss,” and “Walking Back To Love” --songs about love, getting clean and celebrating new beginnings. And of course, the bright spots don’t come without a little darkness. On “The Great Unknown” and “When My Time Comes,” he tells stories of people taking their fate into their own hands, no matter what the outcome. The Taking Or The Leaving was produced by Brian McGee as well as Pete James of The Honeycutters. In addition to lending a hand in pre-production, James also played lead guitar on the album. Recorded at Echo Mountain studios in Asheville, NC (which has housed bands such as Band of Horses, The Avett Brothers' and the Smashing Pumpkins), this album was executed by a handful of world-class musicians and is chock-full of Appalachia guest stars including Sam Quinn of the everybodyfields / Sam Quinn + Japan Ten (on “The Fire”), Mary Ellen Bush of Ménage (on “Here I Am” and “First Kiss”), and Amanda Platt of The Honeycutters (on “Cortona”). With the help of his friends and a hard-wired will to write classic American tunes, Brian McGee has managed to bottle, in this earnest collection of songs, the true spirit of rock and roll. http://www.brianmcgeemusic.com/ http://www.facebook.com/brianmcgeemusic?ref=ts https://twitter.com/brianmcgeemusic www.myspace.com/brianmcgeemusic
Mary Ellen Bush has been a part of the Asheville music scene since 2002, when she and her group Ménage first took the town by storm. She has a powerful, soulful voice that is often compared to Steve Nicks. She is also a talented and prolific songwriter who may be seen strumming the guitar, but really wows people when she plays her upright bass and harmonica at the same time. When on stage, she is captivating as she throws her whole body into whatever song she's belting. Over the years, Bush has appeared with many different groups in a wide range of genres, from 1930s jazz to rock to old-time. Many of her projects involve vocal harmony, mostly three part. Bush is appreciated for her vocal strength, unique sense of style, exceptional ear and her sassy, raspy voice and has thus been called upon to record backing vocals with many bands in the region over the years, such as The Avett Brothers, Stephanie's Id, Strut, Woody Wood, Yo Mamma's Big Fat Booty Band, The Firecracker Jazz Band, Brian McGee, Ben Lovett and Marty Lewis (of The Sons of Ralph). http://www.myspace.com/menage |

Saturday October 2 9:00pm Darien “Deep sea and deep space… I tend to write songs about extremes,” commented Darien, as she introduced a composition off her new release Theorem at one of her recent shows. Classically trained in Ukraine beginning at the age of four, it was a few years later that Darien fell in love with songwriting. She heard old time Irish ballads on the family stereo and was transfixed by the insistent and plaintive melodic ballads filled with evocative stories about relationships. After several years of writing her own songs and a few stabs at recording, Darien began working more seriously on a new collection of songs with producer Andrew Schatzberg at Asheville’s Landslide Studio. Local label Alive and Well Records heard the final tracks and pursued Darien who signed with the label in late 2009. Darien’s album Theorem is a journey of story and sound that leaves you with one desire when it’s over: to hit play again and again. She leads you through songs of magic and whimsy, love and loss, seamlessly moving between genres of chamber pop, electronica and singer-songwriter. Darien’s vocal delivery and lyrical acumen is riveting throughout. Accompanied by stellar production, the Theorem EP is a thoroughly satisfying debut work from an artist to be watched. Darien’s live show brings the full band production of the album to stage along with her charismatic between song storytelling. http://aliveandwellrecords.com/pages/artists/darien.php |

Thursday October 7 8:30pm Jonathan Sexton It’s amazing what can happen in a year. Jonathan Sexton went from a solo artist to a frontman, from a man alone on a journey to the leader of a team. “Big Love (2008)” not only allowed Sexton to reclaim his place on the map in the music world, but more importantly it put in place the series of events that led to the creation and solidification of “The Big Love Choir” -at least the core members that as, because the band maintains “if you have a voice you can sing, and if you wanna sing along, then your in the choir” says drummer Dave Campbell. Sexton adds, “that’s right, its open invite, as long is its about love and respect, its all family.” It truly is all about family, nothing makes this more evident than the addition of Andrew Sexton, Elodie Lafont, and J. Niles Haury to the choir. Drummer Dave “the animal” Campbell has been in since jumpstreet.
What was not even a band a year ago is already getting nods from major concert promoters and sharing the stage with some of the biggest acts from around the region such as DMB collaborator Tim Reynolds and singer songwriter Dave Barnes. This incredible momentum is further evidenced by being added to the Sundown in the City concert series line up for 2009. They are also beginning to make waves regionally swapping gigs with some of the best independent musicians the south has to offer.
Committed to integrity and hard work, great things lie ahead for Jonathan Sexton and the Big Love Choir ~~Rose Cortez www.myspace.com/jonnysexmusic |

Friday October 8 9:00pm Mac Comer
Singer-songwriter Mac Comer has come a long way from his days as Knoxville’s “local hippie dude” who played a mean set of bongos and kicked up a dust storm on the acoustic guitar. For the past eight years, Mac Comer’s lifting Southern twang has packed out crowds in and around the Southeast. But it’s his persistent “do it yourself” approach to promoting himself that has earned him recognition by fans all over the world. Comer’s staple is found in Knoxville, TN where he began showcasing his music. As a young singer-songwriter, he promoted himself vigorously by spending countless hours singing his heart out at the local “open mice nights” around town. As Comer’s popularity grew, he landed spots amongst Knoxville’s premier music venues. In 2005, Comer released his debut album, Something New. Shortly following the release, The Daily Beacon complimented Comer’s galloping score by calling it a “genre-crossing tribute to folksy guitar rock, in the stylings of Jason Mraz, Keller Williams, and Widespread Panic. In 2008, Comer paired up with Knoxville’s own Cruz Contreras to release his second album, Trails of My Town. Just recently, Johnson City’s Tricities.com applauded Comer for “his slashing guitar style that evokes Daves Matthews crossed with Richie Havens…and his raspy voice that seemingly borrows from no one.” He’s a magician of folk. Or a jester, juggling harmonica licks and crafty guitar rifts. http://www.maccomer.com |

Friday October 15 9:00pm Moors & McCumber James Moors and Kort McCumber met at the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival in 2005. Sitting around a campfire swapping songs, James and Kort each heard something in the music of the other that just fit. The two have been performing and writing together since. Having collectively sold more than 15,000 copies of independent releases from the stage, "Moors and McCumber" is the initial offering from the duo. James Moors is heralded by Steve Morse, longtime Boston Globe writer, as Sharing some of the same melodic gifts of Neil Finn, enhanced by a warm-hearted spirit that makes you want to hear more. Born and raised in Minneapolis, Moors lists the Replacements, Soul Asylum and Prince among his early musical guideposts but it was the songwriting of Shawn Colvin and Martin Sexton that set the artist on his current path. A talented multi-instrumentalist, McCumber plays everything from guitar, banjo, mandolin, harmonica and piano in his brand of Americana that’s one part rock and blues, two parts country-bluegrass and all parts McCumber. But it is his songwriting abilities that have made him a Colorado favorite, and garnered him national and international recognition. A winner of last year’s Flat Rock Festival Songwriting Competition in North Carolina and a finalist in this year’s International Songwriting Competition, McCumber has been humbled and inspired by the achievements, which only adds to his passion for touring and sharing his music with every town he visits. --Marquee Magazine in Boulder, CO written by Joseph Kovack --- “Ricochet House Concerts in Salt Lake City, UT hosted James Moors and Kort McCumber back in January. The two of them make an outstanding duo. They have written some wonderful songs together. Their voices mesh perfectly and they have a unique energy between them. They are obvious friends and have a tremendous respect for each other. Watching them perform together is truly special.” http://www.myspace.com/moorsandmccumber www.kortmusic.com |

Saturday October 16 9:00pm Taylor Moore Band "I never thought that Greenville, SC, by way of St. Croix was the secret pathway to musical success," says platinum-selling singer/songwriter Edwin McCain. "Taylor Moore and I share the underground King Cross Street connection. The adventurer's spirit and the sailor's soul, cradled by the well-worn Blue Ridge Mountains." Though the wanderlust-stricken McCain -- whose hits include "I'll Be," "I Could Not Ask For More" and "Solitude" -- tours 200-plus nights out of the year, he was born in Greenville, SC, where Moore, the Caribbean journalist-turned full-time guitar-slinger, songwriter and bandleader now calls home. The two crossed paths navigating the burgeoning Carolina music scene in 2010 -- McCain the veteran troubadour and Moore the moxie-laden, roadrunning newcomer -- where they learned of that "King Cross Street connection." Both had lived just blocks away from one another in Christiansted, St. Croix, USVI, though in different eras. "I want to see myself in him... but I could never play electric guitar like Taylor," McCain says. "I have promised myself not to hover over him like a big brother, but I can't help but feel proud of his musical future. There is a band of silver that only a few wear that comes with a wink and a nod. Taylor has reminded me to get mine out of my lock box and dream that blue water dream and sing a salty tune." But Taylor's not only stirring up recognition among his fellow musicial compatriots, but the critics as well. According to the Atlanta Music Guide,“Moore absolutely beats his guitar senseless when he plays, and you would think that would take away from the energy he exudes in his singing; quite the contrary…,” while Metromix Greenville says: “Now Greenville-based, Moore infuses post-Stevie Ray Vaughn licks—SRV acolyte Chris Duarte is a major influence—with Caribbean spirit.” Moore takes such spirit across the Southeast, to musical hotbeds like Atlanta or Athens, GA, Asheville, NC and Charleston, Columbia and Greenville, SC. He considers his second home the island of St. Croix, where he frequents and tours. http://www.taylormooremusic.com

Tuesday October 19 6:30pm Jeff Miller Before his freshman year of high school, Jeff Miller decided to sell all of his video games and buy his first guitar. Soon after, songwriting became a passion. He formed a band with two other friends in the Pittsburgh suburb where he grew up. They recorded an album and played numerous shows together.
After high school, Miller was off to Boston’s Berklee College of Music, where he studied Guitar Performance and Songwriting. His plan was to find compatible musicians, and to form another band. That never happened.
A degree from Berklee, a move back home to Pittsburgh, a move to Nashville, and 3 solo albums (and an EP) later, Jeff Miller is still playing music. In fact, he plays over 150 shows a year, touring the east coast and the midwest. His music has received airplay at over 175 stations, in the U.S. and abroad.
His third album, Seesaw, was co-produced by Matt Mangano (Darrell Scott, John Mayer, Dave Barnes), who also played bass on the album. It also features Nick Buda (Edwin McCain, Mindy Smith) on drums and percussion. The Pittsburgh Tribune raves, “Miller’s music is timeless. The songs on Seesaw are infectious delights.”
Miller still hasn’t found a regular band. But that’s fine with him and his listeners. At his live shows, he uses a device to record and loop guitar and vocal parts, creating more sound than some bands do. Using his voice, guitar, hands and feet, he is able to act as each member of a regular band – a singer, guitarist, bassist, even a drummer. You really should see/hear it for yourself.
To mark 10 years of looping, Miller decided that his next album should be a live one. So his 197th show of 2008 was recorded in his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA. The result is Miller's brand new full-length album, "Can You Hear the Music?". Currently based out of Nashville, he's touring to promote this 77-minute Live CD. http://www.jeffmilleronline.com |

Tuesday October 26 6:30pm Lonnie Glass It was 1957 and my omo was taking me and my bro to see The King, Elvis, at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Canada... I still rememeber the Gold Lammay suit and the lady in front of us with her B-Hive hairdo. I swivelled and swayed for weeks trying to cop those hip movements. I knew that performance would be in my stars. It was 1964 and The Beatles were in Toronto..I was in a band within weeks of seeing them. I dug Paul and also played bass in the school orchestra so it was a natural for me. The only problem I had then was my hair!! I had this afro-type curl and it just didn't sit like Beatle hair....I also sang with an Otis type growl...So, it was R&B for me for severalyears. After the pshycedelics started, after i saw Cream & Hendrix and Zepplin(in Toronto at a small club)..I knew I would be rockin' for a long time. I travelled abroad for a year to just see the world and went back to University where I immediately quit and joined a band. When I got back to the Toronto area I went to hang with some friends who had this ultra kool band, Icarus, and it was there that I connected with Eddy Schwartz. We hit it off and once that band had finished we were a DUO, Schwartz & Glass....for quite a few years we travelled around and played acoustic music...Eddy on guitar and me on String Bass...we would open many a Rock show playing Woody Guthrie tunes and many of Eddy's brilliant originals. when we parted company I went back to the Rock scene and worked in several bands with a 3 year stint doing the jobbing circuit...Bar Mitzvah's & Weddings...helped my chops, at least!!! Then in 1983 I got together with my dear childhood friend and we started up the biggest Tribute band in Canada, Tres Hombres, an homage to ZZTOP...it was exceptionally sweet! We toured like crazy. We did 3 Cross Canada tours, 47 East Coast tours, 5 years in the USA touring heavily in the South, Scandinavia for 5 tours....all in the past 20 years...We still Rock out on weekends...it is an amazing experience to see the children of the people who used to watch us in clubs.... In 1991 I had my 1st CD release....actually it never did get properly released as the Indi label went bust 1 month after it was out...i got some great airplay out West, especially in Red Deer, Alta....who'd a thunk it? I began writing in the late 1980's but really began trying the acoustic guitar thingy in the past 5 or 6 years. I joined Taxi and tried to get songs placed but nothing came of that other than meeting, over the internet, Norman Ball who, although we have never met. we have collaborated on about 30 tunes to date. My newest CD, Finishing Sentences, is that collaboration. Though I am a young 56 years old I am still hungry to pursue my music not just for the pure love of it but the fun of joining with others of like mind and spirit undaunted by the constraints of the "industries limitations. Always with the hope of transmitting some little bit of reflection and message from the years i have had on this green bump..... ..."there are bridges in music, bridges need to built...." www.lonnieglass.com |

Thursday October 28 8:30pm Katie Toupin and Matt Myers Katie Toupin grew up around two things: music and horses. Her father played guitar and loved learning new music. When Katie would sing to the Beatles or Bonnie Raitt on the radio, he’d tell Katie, “Don’t be shy. Sing loud.”
But Katie’s first love was riding horses, and she was good at it – becoming an instructor in her teens. But it was not to last.
A snowboarding accident broke her arm and ended her equestrian career. Feeling lost, she made a mission trip to the Dominican Republic, where, on a beach one night, as she played and sang to herself, a group of tourists gathered around and wanted to hear more. “It felt like God was calling me to sing,” she said.
After the trip, Katie sang and played countless hours with her father, honing her skills, preparing for what was to replace her lost career as a horsewoman.
Matt Myers started playing guitar when he was thirteen “to appeal to women.” At first fascinated by neoclassical rock, he later became interested in blues, listening to old recordings of Albert King and Albert Collins.
That blues influence blossomed into a blues band with his cousins during high school. After the band broke up (members moved away to college) Matt enrolled in a university music program. He preferred applying music theory to his guitar work rather than his homework, so eventually left the program to pursue music full time.
Now, both the formal training and blues influences are evident in Matt’s thoughtful approach to acoustic guitar.
Katie & Matt
As soon as Katie heard Matt, she wanted to introduce him to her father. The three met, started rehearsing, and soon were playing local venues. When Katie’s father felt Matt and Katie could go it alone, they did, playing their first gig with a whopping three-song repertoire.
Katie and Matt now write their own songs, combining their varied talents in a unique style influenced by Stevie Ray Vaughan, Dave Rawlings, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, the Felice Brothers, Gillian Welch, and Neil Young.
With Katie’s powerful vocals, Matt’s appealing guitar work, and their earthy, lyrical songs, Katie Toupin and Matt Myers are poised on the cusp of a compelling career.

Jim Reilley, Contemporary Folk Grammy nominee, and producer of Franklin newest album, "Girl Invisible,' says, "her songs evoke a warmth and intelligence that most of her peers could only dream of. Thursday November 11 8:30pm Brian Pepper Brian Pepper was born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky. At age 14, he began playing guitar and was soon writing his own music. His earliest musical influences were oldies and classic rock radio stations, the blues of Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and Lightning Hopkins, and later, classical guitar, which he studied for a year. In high school, Brian's faves were The Replacements, The Cure, Nick Drake, Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan, and the alt-country / Americana music that was buzzing just below the radar.
In college, he studied classical piano, and played guitar and piano as a member of the school jazz ensemble, majoring in piano performance. He taught piano after college, but soon turned his attention to songwriting, playing coffee houses and clubs in downtown Lexington.
In 2004, he moved to the Nashville area. His debut LP on Ten O Nine Records, Lost Days, contains all original songs bringing together his diverse musical influences. The sessions took place at the legendary Delmark Records' Riverside Studios in Chicago, IL, America's oldest independent jazz and blues label, and home of luminaries such as Junior Wells, Magic Sam and Jimmy Dawkins. Brian was accompanied in the studio with a cast of all-star players including Jon Hiller (Chuck Berry, Big Shoulders, Tad Robinson, Eddie Clearwater) on drums, Steve Dvorak (Buddy Guy, Bo Diddley, Junior Wells) on guitar, Mike Keefe (Wicked) on keyboards, Gary Krolak (Sunnyland Slim, Kat Eggleston, Otters, Big Shoulders) on bass and Braden Land on bass and lap steel. "Brian pens tunes straight from the heart, recalling some of Bruce's more reflective motivational ballad moments. All tunes here are originals, which argues further for artistic regard. Brian's vocals are both poignant and ground-level expressive. And when the sweeping guitars, declarative keys and decisive rhythms are joined by violin and cello, "singer/songwriter" -- though eminently apt -- fails to convey the sheer force". -DC Larson blogspot (I'm not sure how I feel about evoking Bruce's "motivational ballad moments") "...keep an eye on Pepper. He has the ability and talent... that could possibly propel him beyond the greatness of Guitar Town-era Steve Earle." -Gary Sheppard, Fig&Mint.com (In all honesty, Mr. Sheppard panned Lost Days and I don't even know if he likes Steve Earle, but this sounded pretty good) http://www.tenonine.com/artists/pepper/index.html
